Do I need travel insurance for Europe?

When you’re dreaming of castles, croissants and cobblestoned streets, travel insurance for Europe might not be at the top of your list, but it can certainly help you enjoy a more care-free holiday. And although not legally compulsory when travelling through Europe, it can be a lifeline when something goes wrong.

A GHIC can get emergency treatment in a public hospital, but won’t cover mountain rescue, repatriation or the cost of a companion staying in case you find yourself in hospital. Enter Staysure. Their Europe travel insurance includes unlimited emergency medical costs on Signature products, pays out if you need to cancel before you depart (up to £15,000 per person) and also protects your baggage.

They are the UK’s favourite travel insurance provider with more 5-star Trustpilot reviews than any other insurer. They cover over 1,300 medical conditions and any age group.** Plus, get free access to their 24/7 Travel Doctor service for English-speaking medical assistance abroad*, so they’re with you from booking to safe return.

Does my EHIC/GHIC cover me for travel to Europe?

Even if you hold a valid Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) or European Health Insurance Card (EHIC), you may still need travel insurance for Europe. Your GHIC means you are covered for public healthcare in European Economic Area (EEA) nations either free or at a reduced cost. It does not cover travel cancellations, loss of baggage, repatriation, ambulance call outs, daily hospital costs, prescriptions or personal liability. These are matters that a travel insurance policy can cover.

If you become ill or are wounded you can access free emergency state healthcare in Montenegro using your GHIC card. But if your health takes a turn for the worse and you need to be deported back home your GHIC won’t cover the fees. You’re protected against medical and travel-related hiccups with Staysure and an EHIC or GHIC card.

What does Europe travel insurance cover?

What’s covered?

  • Emergency medical treatment abroad – for example hospital care, ambulance transport and overnight stays if you become extremely ill or wounded while overseas.
  • Getting you home safely – repatriation cover if you’re too ill to fly as scheduled, including expert medical transport if you require it.
  • Cancellations due to illness or accident, including if you’re too unwell to travel or you have a bereavement.
  • Cutting your holiday short – insurance if something catastrophic happens during your holiday and you have to return home early.
  • Personal possessions lost, stolen or damaged, including your bags, passport and personal money.
  • Pre-existing conditions – if you’ve told them about them and they’ve accepted them, they can be added to your policy.

Example: You’re sitting in a Michelin-star restaurant in Venice, enjoying a deliciously meaty dinner, when a wishbone lodges firmly in your throat. A genuine pain in the neck, but not for long, because they’ll pay the ambulance fees and the emergency medical treatment you’ll need to expel the bony intruder and make a full recovery.

What isn’t covered?

  • Cancelling because you changed your mind – not covered for anything else including insured reasons.
  • Missed flights, unless due to a strike* severe weather or mechanical breakdown.
  • Undeclared medical ailments – always tell them about any health problems when you acquire a quote.
  • Unattended things – Left alone valuables may not be protected.
  • Activities not included in your policy – like extreme sports, if you’ve included them.
  • Travel contrary to advice of the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) – insurance will not cover travel to countries against which the UK government recommends all travel.
  • Alcohol or drug incidents – claims involving excess alcohol or controlled substances will not be accepted.
  • Flying contrary to medical advice – for example, flying too soon after surgery or illness;
  • Travelling overseas for medical care — consultations, testing or planned operations.

Example:  You broke your leg a couple of weeks ago and your doctor told you not to move. You went ahead and booked a dream trip to the Netherlands anyway. Your leg hurts before you leave so you cancel your trip. Unfortunately, since you scheduled and planned your journey on medical advice, they wouldn’t be able to insure you.
